As a part of our annual spiritual visits, we visited Chowalloor Shiva temple near Guruvayur. When we reached there we realized that there was some special puja going on there and it must be a special and important day in the temple. We noticed the board saying that the annual celebration of Thiruvathira Mahotsavam has begun.

The place was quite crowded, Thiruvathira Mahotsavam is a 12 day long celebration for the Thiruvathira festival and it was the first day there. January 3rd would be the concluding day and the most important day. is a vibrant annual celebration dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, observed during the auspicious Thiruvathira star in the Malayalam month of Dhanu. The festival features a rich schedule of traditional rituals and cultural events that draw devotees from across the region.
The festivities begin. with a sacred procession of ornaments, where silk and gold items for the deity were ceremonially carried from the Thiruvambadi Temple with traditional percussion accompaniment — a deeply symbolic and devotional start to the Mahotsavam.
Throughout the festival period, special poojas, abhishekams, and offerings were conducted daily, with many devotees participating in prayers for marital harmony, family well-being and spiritual blessings. The temple premises buzzed with devotional fervour, traditional music, and community spirit, making the Thiruvathira Mahotsavam a memorable highlight of the temple’s annual calendar.
